Manchester City must identify their next Rodri after reaching an agreement to transfer the World Cup champion to Barcelona for £65.4m.
Enzo Maresca has issued a challenge to Manchester City to find a replacement for Rodri as the club seeks to continue their successful era. The Italian manager, who took over from Pep Guardiola, faces a difficult task after losing his key midfielder to the Spanish club this summer, though he believes this should not prove problematic for the club.
City have already shattered their transfer record this summer by acquiring Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m and may be required to pay over £80m for Lille’s teenage talent Ayyoub Bouaddi. Both players possess some of the attributes necessary to fill the void left by Rodri, though the Ballon d’Or recipient was exceptional for such an extended period largely because he appeared to perform the duties of two players combined.
That makes finding a direct replacement challenging, but that is what City must accomplish after agreeing to the £65.4m sale to Barcelona. Maresca noted before the Premier League season commenced that Rodri only reached his current elite level during his time at City, and the club has previously succeeded in replacing numerous outstanding players, indicating that proper recruitment and coaching can help them through this transition.
The Italian stated he will attempt to find a new Rodri, acknowledging the situation as unavoidable. He explained that when Rodri first arrived at the club, he had not yet won the Ballon d’Or, Champions League, or Club World Cup, but went on to achieve numerous significant honours during his time there. The current objective for the team is to try to find the next Rodri. Maresca recalled that when David Silva was at the club, there were concerns about the future, but Kevin De Bruyne arrived. Similarly, when Sergio Agüero was present, worries existed, but Erling Haaland subsequently joined. When Fernandinho departed, Rodri arrived. The pattern continues in this manner. When players leave, the club must recruit well for the next one. However, all these players are comparable in impact: David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Rodri, Agüero, and Haaland. This is simply part of normal transition, not a problem. The solution is to continue forward and make the right decisions.
