Manchester City academy graduate Charlie Gray has secured a temporary switch to League One side Wigan Athletic for the rest of the campaign.
The 20-year-old central midfielder has departed the Etihad Stadium on a season-long basis. Reports emerged on Thursday morning that the transfer was nearing completion, with Gray absent from City’s under-21 side during their EFL Trophy victory against Mansfield Town on Wednesday evening. The youngster had been present at Wigan’s stadium on Tuesday as they took on Aston Villa’s under-21 team.
Gray earned his first taste of senior football with the Blues in December, featuring in their Carabao Cup triumph over Brentford, which concluded 2-0. Throughout the current season, he was honoured as the Elite Development Squad Players’ Player of the Year.
Upon finalising his move, Gray expressed his enthusiasm to Wigan’s official platform, stating he was delighted to secure his initial loan spell and join a club of Wigan’s stature under such an experienced manager. He noted that the tactical approach aligns well with his preferred style of play. Gray emphasised the significance of gaining experience in senior football at his age, describing it as fundamentally different from under-21 competition and expressing eagerness to begin.
Manchester City confirmed Gray’s departure through an official club statement, highlighting his consistent performances at development squad level and the subsequent interest from senior coaching staff that led to his breakthrough. The statement extended best wishes to Gray for the upcoming season.
Gray arrived at City’s academy at the Under-nine age group and has since claimed both the FA Youth Cup and Premier League 2 championship during his progression through the youth ranks. He will reunite with former City academy colleague Finley Burns at Wigan, with the defender having completed a £200,000 transfer to the club earlier this month.
Sources indicate that Manchester City are expected to approve several additional academy departures as the transfer window draws to a close, with numerous young players identified for loan moves to aid their progression. Gray could make his first appearance for the Latics when they welcome Leyton Orient to home turf on Saturday.
