Tijjani Reijnders has finished his transition away from Manchester City, joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah in a deal worth £52million.
The central midfielder is leaving the Etihad Stadium exactly 12 months after arriving in Manchester, having previously been purchased from AC Milan for £47m.
The Dutch international, now 28, featured 47 times for the club during the previous campaign but found consistent form and regular selection elusive.
His exit follows several other departures from the engine room, with Bernardo Silva and Rodri moving on during this transfer window while Elliot Anderson has arrived and Ayyoub Bouaddi is expected to join.
Reijnders featured in three pre-season matches on the Asian tour under new manager Maresca, though the freshly-appointed boss suggested before the Community Shield that the player had already determined his future prior to the Italian taking charge, citing a disappointing 12 months under Pep Guardiola.
Maresca stated that players engage in daily training and sessions, wanting weekend game time, but when that doesn’t materialise they find it difficult to comprehend why or accept the reasoning. He acknowledged that after a single season, some players naturally seek greater opportunities elsewhere, describing it as standard. The coach explained that convincing players who have already made up their minds proves challenging, noting that when club, player and manager align on the same conclusion that departure serves the individual best, the move should happen. He compared Reijnders’ circumstances to James Trafford’s and other similar situations.
In a farewell message, Reijnders expressed gratitude for the privilege of representing Manchester City and described savouring every moment, recalling how immediately upon arrival, everyone connected to the club from squad members to coaching personnel and employees made him feel included and valued as family. He offered particular appreciation to the supporters for their warmth and backing extended to both himself and his loved ones. He reflected on the remarkable honour of contributing to a side that claimed two significant pieces of silverware last term, experiences he will cherish indefinitely. Despite the move taking him elsewhere, he declared City will hold a permanent place in his affections.
