Guehi kept smiling after £35m Liverpool transfer collapsed before Man City move

The manner in which Marc Guehi conducted himself during a turbulent period in his career provided a compelling illustration of the character Manchester City were acquiring when they eventually secured his services.

The centre-back, who had previously demonstrated his abilities through consistent performances for Chelsea’s youth system and Crystal Palace, as well as establishing himself as a fixture in the England national team setup, had encountered a significant setback approximately 12 months prior to joining the Etihad Stadium.

A proposed switch to Liverpool had been in advanced stages, with the Merseyside club having negotiated a £35million fee with Palace.

The player had undergone his medical examination with the Anfield outfit and appeared poised to make the switch.

However, Palace elected to terminate negotiations at the final moment, having been unable to identify an adequate replacement for the defender.

The circumstances provided ample justification for frustration.

Having presumably arranged his affairs around commencing a fresh challenge at Anfield, the opportunity to join the reigning top-flight champions had been abruptly removed.

Nevertheless, rather than displaying visible irritation, Guehi reported for international duty shortly afterwards and reportedly maintained his customary demeanour.

Observers noted that he continued to smile during training sessions, engaging with his England teammates in light-hearted fashion and declining to allow the setback to influence his approach.

The incident offered a telling indication of the player’s mental fortitude and professional outlook, attributes that have subsequently contributed to his reputation as one of the division’s most dependable defenders.

Upon completing his £20million transfer to Manchester, the 26-year-old required minimal time to adapt to his new surroundings.

Prior to his arrival, the club had managed only one victory in six league fixtures.

From the moment of his debut through to the campaign’s conclusion, City remained unbeaten in league competition, emerging triumphant in 10 of their 15 matches during that phase.

His presence provided additional solidity to a rearguard that had appeared susceptible in preceding months, and he rapidly became a regular selection in the starting eleven.

Such progress represented a notable accomplishment given the quality of competition for positions, with Ruben Dias, John Stones, Josko Gvardiol and Abdukodir Khusanov all pressing for inclusion in City’s defensive unit.

The arrival of Guehi coincided with an upturn in results, though the side ultimately finished runners-up to Arsenal in the league table.

Silverware was secured nonetheless, with City prevailing 1-0 against Chelsea in the FA Cup final, fellow January acquisition Antoine Semenyo providing the crucial goal.

Guehi has begun the current season positively.

Despite City conceding three goals in their Community Shield reverse against Arsenal last month, Enzo Maresca’s squad responded by securing victories in their opening two league encounters.

The defender found the net during the 2-1 triumph over Bournemouth and followed that performance with a composed showing in the 4-1 victory over his former club Palace.

City were scheduled to visit Coventry on Saturday, with Maresca’s players targeting a third consecutive league victory.
