Oli Reiss’ Manchester City Under-21s secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Mansfield Town in the Vertu Trophy, with Xavier Parker netting twice to help the Blues to a commanding win.
The young City side made a strong start to their campaign, finding the net three times within a 13-minute spell during the first half to take control against their League One opponents, who had selected a lineup blending senior players with their squad.
Parker struck first after being given room to operate at the edge of the area, before adding a second soon after. Tyrone Samba then added a third before half-time.
While the result appears straightforward on paper, the contest was more competitive than the scoreline indicates, with the hosts creating numerous chances. New Manchester City recruit Max Chabot impressed between the posts, though the visitors ultimately could not preserve a clean sheet after conceding a late goal to Regan Hendry.
The manager expressed satisfaction with both the outcome and much of the display, particularly praising the willingness to defend bravely against a Mansfield side who delivered numerous crosses into the penalty area.
The fourth goal came from a swift counter-attack, with a long ball releasing Kylan Midwood, who outpaced the advancing goalkeeper and finished into the unguarded net.
Mansfield accumulated 22 attempts on goal without success. Their frustration was compounded by Chabot’s performance, as the Frenchman produced several important saves on his debut following his transfer from Angers. Parker departed to be replaced by Femi Fapetu as the visitors looked to close out the remaining minutes while maintaining their advantage.
Despite Mansfield’s dominance in possession during the second half, City’s defensive organisation held firm, limiting clear opportunities after the opening exchanges.
City managed the tempo effectively through sustained periods of ball retention, displaying comfort in challenging areas and preventing their opponents from building momentum.
A double substitution saw Finlay Gorman and Josh Wilson-Esbrand enter the fray as the visitors sought to preserve their lead.
With a three-goal cushion at the interval, City appeared confident returning for the second half. The group stage also features Port Vale and Chesterfield, with the top two teams progressing to the knockout rounds.
City had previously dominated the opening quarter before taking the lead through Parker, who later doubled his tally before Samba extended the advantage further.
Chabot produced two crucial stops as Mansfield pressed for a route back into the contest, with the defence holding firm during a sustained spell of pressure.
Owen Dodgson, recently arriving on loan from Stockport, forced a corner and headed against the crossbar from the subsequent set-piece.
Samba completed the scoring with a low drive past the goalkeeper at his near post, giving the Blues a commanding lead.
Christian Dunbar-McDonald showed impressive skill to bypass the home captain and force an intervention from the keeper.
The second goal arrived after Floyd Samba’s quick footwork created an opening, with the resulting shot being blocked before Parker nudged the rebound home from close range.
The opening goal came from a Mansfield error in their own territory, allowing Parker space to finish from the edge of the area.
City had struggled to build meaningful attacks up to that point, frequently losing possession when playing out from defence.
Mansfield had enjoyed several promising periods, though George Maris was among those unable to convert when well-placed, skyed a close-range effort over the bar from eight yards out.
Chabot denied Moriah-Walsh with a smart challenge after Mansfield worked the ball wide.
Kaden Braithwaite attempted to set up Tyrone Samba, though the forward could not control the pass at the crucial moment.
Kian Noble led the side as captain, with Chabot taking his place in goal following his recent transfer. The lineup comprised Chabot, Nfonkeu, Noble, Drake, Braithwaite, Miles, Dunbar-McDonald, F. Samba, Midwood, X. Parker, and T. Samba, with Hudson, Courtman, Tevenan, Wilson-Esbrand, Fapetu, and Gorman among the substitutes.
Reiss has taken charge of the Under-21 side this term after leading the Under-18s to FA Youth Cup success last season. He has been succeeded as Under-18s manager by his former assistant Lauris Coggin.
In related news, Tijjani Reijnders has transferred to Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah for approximately £52million. The Dutch midfielder arrived at City twelve months ago and made 47 appearances across all competitions.
