Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has revealed his four-player leadership structure for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign.
Ruben Dias has been appointed as the club’s primary captain, succeeding Bernardo Silva who departed on a free transfer during the summer after the Portugal international’s spell at the Etihad Stadium.
Erling Haaland continues to feature among the leadership group alongside the new appointments of Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The January acquisition Guehi and goalkeeper Donnarumma have both been handed increased responsibility for the new season following the departures of both Silva and Rodri, which created two vacancies in the captaincy setup.
Donnarumma brings specialist knowledge between the posts, while Dias anchors the defensive line as the main skipper.
Haaland remains despite Maresca previously jesting that the striker’s prolific goal-scoring rate meant he could not serve as primary captain, as the Norwegian’s celebrations when finding the net would interrupt the flow of instructions passing through the leadership group.
Maresca opted to personally select the captains rather than conduct a traditional dressing-room vote.
The Italian also expressed a desire to incorporate an English player into his leadership structure.
Although Phil Foden put himself forward for consideration, Maresca instead chose Guehi, who had previously captained Crystal Palace and has quickly become a key component of the first team.
The 26-year-old demonstrated his versatility by operating in midfield during the season-opening fixture, showcasing the additional dimensions Maresca believes he can offer to the squad.
Enzo Fernandez, whose arrival from Chelsea on deadline day last year commanded a club-record fee of £125 million, has not been immediately included in the leadership group.
The Argentine international had been a crucial enforcer for Maresca during their time together at Stamford Bridge, and the manager had expressed interest in reuniting with him upon taking charge at City this summer.
However, the 23-year-old has not been named among the captains for the current season.
